When I applied to Plymouth, I'd hardly ever heard of the city. I just knew it was in Devon, but it felt a world away from life in a big city. So hopefully here is an insight into life in the Southwest.

Our Campus

Plymouth University has a city centre campus, so our modest shopping centre "Drake's Circus" is across the road where you will find the eateries and all the shops. (Regrettably, we do not have a Zara.) However, we do have most of the other big shops and smaller independent shops too with Grocery stores. We recently have more options for different requirements such as halal eateries etc which were not here a few years ago. So it's getting better! What is also unique is that the waterfront it equally close at a 15 minute walk and many students go for early morning sea swims before heading to campus for a lecture. Pretty cool!

Societies

Again, being by the water is a huge selling point. After all, we aren't the Ocean City for no reason. There are plenty of societies which practice water based activities. For example, Yachting, surfing etc.

Safety

On a serious note, with the recent tragic events in Plymouth, this may well be a concern. I'd like to reassure you that in my 5 years here, Plymouth is extremely safe and a lovely place to live. The locals are friendly and it has a very chill vibe. As with every city, there can be dangers and things to avoid. Please be safe and ensure you are not walking home from nights out on your own.

Devon and Cornwall

The whole country flocks to Devon and Cornwall come May, and for good reason. There is a plethora of beaches and sights to see on our doorstep and a weekly beach trip is perfectly doable. Weekends away in Cornwall are a treat and I'd highly urge you to explore.
