Jo, Dental Therapy and Hygiene

Why did I choose Plymouth?

Choosing the University of Plymouth was a no brainer for me as the course I was interested in was Dental Therapy and Hygiene. Peninsula dental school has an excellent reputation and the training facilities are top end.

Many of my previous work colleagues had also graduated from Plymouth and spoke very highly of their experience. As well as its reputation the university also scores high on the student satisfaction survey.

Accommodation

As a mature student with a husband at home I didn't want to live away in accommodation so I commute on the train from Falmouth on a daily basis. It sounds tiring but you soon become used to it. It’s not that bad really as you get to study on the train and relax at the same time. Even though I don't live in the city I've made time to explore in my downtime and I've discovered that the people of Plymouth are welcoming.

The interview

  • Definitely read up on the university, what makes them stand out and what your chosen course specifically offers.

  • Relax, be yourself and remember to smile!

  • The interview is quite short so use the time wisely to answer the questions.

  • Enjoy the process because even if you don't get offered a place its still good experience at the end of the day.

It was quite a difficult decision to make returning to full time study.

Having worked full time for 21 years it was daunting especially giving up a well paid job and pension contributions. Doing a list of pros and cons helped me decide.

But even though I am the oldest on my course I don't feel out of place and I am surprised how many mature students I've seen walking round the campus.
